Cabinet to decide on essential goods to remove VAT

Cabinet will decide on the prices of essential goods when it convenes next Tuesday and VAT will not be added to these items, the Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen?said today.

?Though the VAT component is applied to certain commodities, the VAT component is not applied to?essential food items? the?Minister said.

He noted that an issue has been raised recently with regard to the price of consumer goods as the price of essential commodities have been differed significantly from one district to another.

The Minister also said that his Ministry will take measures?to re-gazzete the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) of the essential items and publish the maximum prices through the electronic and print media. (Colombo Gazette)
