Resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa as PM gazetted

The resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister has been gazetted. The gazette noted that Mahinda Rajapaksa has resigned from the Office of Prime Minister of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka under article 47(2)(b) of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, with effect from May 09, 2022. SLPP MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and security officer found dead

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer were found dead in Nittambuwa today. The MP had reportedly opened fire on anti-Government demonstrators and fled with his security officer. He was later found dead together with his security officer. It is still not clear how he died but some claim he committed suicide after being surrounded by a mob. A 27-year-old youth died from gun-shot wounds after being shot at by the MP. (Colombo Gazette)

Protesters lay siege to Temple Trees

Protesters surrounded and made several attempts to force their way into Temple Trees this evening. The Police fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowds but the crowds continued to return, resulting in more tear gas. Shots were also fired in the air as the protesters used barricades and other items to try open the gate. (Colombo Gazette)
