Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka to obtain UNP membership

Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka is to obtain?membership in the United National Party (UNP).

Fonseka will obtain the UNP membership at the party headquarters in Sirikotha on Thursday, the UNP said.

In February Fonseka was given the vacant UNP National List seat in Parliament.

The decision was taken when the UNP Working Committee met at the time?to decide on the National List seat left vacant following the demise of M.K.D.S. Gunawardena.

Fonseka?s Democratic Party and the UNP had then reached an agreement to work together.

The former Army Commander contested the last Parliamentary election but failed to secure enough votes to enter Parliament.

He has been accused by human rights groups of being involved in war crimes during the final stages of the war. (Colombo Gazette)

Two missing, five rescued in the seas off Mount Lavinia

Two people have been reported missing and five others have been rescued in the seas off Mount Lavinia. The Police said that a group had gone to Mount Lavinia on a day out. A few of them had gone to bath in the sea when tragedy struck. The Police said that two 18 year-old youth had been dragged out to sea and are missing. Five others were rescued and brought ashore. Leopard dies after being caught in a snare in Gampola

A leopard which got caught in a snare in Gampola has died, the Department of Wildlife Conservation said. The leopard had got caught in the snare on a private land in Doluwa, Gampola.
