The projects launched by the former Government which were termed as “white elephant” projects are to be revived by the current Government.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that the Hambantota port and airport will be made fully operational to receive higher traffic than it currently does.
“We promised to fill the Hambantota port with ships. We are ready for that. Only one plane arrives at the?Mattala international airport. We hope to have more planes landing their soon,” he said.
The Prime Minister also said that the Norochcholai coal power plant will also be made fully operational.
Wickremesinghe was speaking at a United National Party (UNP) event in Kuliyapitiya today.
Speaking further, the Prime Minister said that several parts of the country, including Hambantota will also undergo massive development.
He said that new factories will be opened in these areas to provide jobs to the public while efforts will also be taken to give?the tourism sector a boost.
The Prime Minister said that German car manufacturer?Volkswagen will begin setting up a factory in Sri Lanka from August or September this year.
Wickremesinghe said that up-stair houses will be constructed in villages and not just the cities by the Government so everyone can enjoy a little bit of luxury.
