China offers to assist relief work following floods and landslides

The Chinese Government?has offered to assist relief work in Sri Lanka following the?devastating floods and landslides.

In a letter to President Maithripala Sirisena, the Chinese Ambassador in Colombo, Yi Xianliang said that China will do its utmost to assist Sri Lanka’s relief work.

?On behalf of the government and people of the People?s Republic of China, I wish to extend my deepest condolence to the Government and people of Sri Lanka on the tragic loss of life and property following the heavy rains that led to severe flooding and landslides around the Island. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sri Lankan people as the search and rescue effort continues,? the Ambassador said.

?At this time of grief, the Government and the people of the People?s Republic of China reiterate their solidarity, friendship and support for the Government and the people of Sri Lanka, and will do its utmost for Sri Lanka’s relief work. We also believe under the leadership of your Excellency the Sri Lankan people will surely conquer the disaster.?

Over 40?people have been reported dead and 134 are missing following three days of heavy rain which resulted in floods and multiple landslides this week. (Colombo Gazette)
