Construction sites warned over dengue breeding grounds

09 May, 2016

Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faiszer Musthapha?today warned that measures will be taken to suspend the clearance?given to construction sites in Colombo and other parts of the country if they fail to adhere to the notice issued over dengue breeding grounds.

The warning comes following reports?a?project director of the Chinese company handling the construction of the Shangri-La Hotel in Galle Face was arrested for maintaining dengue breeding grounds.

Musthapha said that he will have discussions with the relevant authorities, including the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC), on the matter.

“If a construction site disregards the notice given to clear dengue breeding grounds then steps must be taken to cancel clearance given for the project by the local council till steps are taken to clear the dengue breeding grounds,” he said.

He said there is a possibility of several dengue breeding grounds being formed at construction sites and so measures must be taken to arrest the situation. (Colombo Gazette)
