Parliament erupts over supplementary estimates submitted yesterday

Parliament erupted today as the opposition and Government exchanged words over the supplementary estimates submitted yesterday.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya was forced to suspend sitting for a party leaders meeting to discuss the issue.

The opposition accused the Government of misleading the House by giving Rs. 55 million as the?supplementary estimate.

Opposition parliamentarian Dinesh Gunawardena said that the actual amount was much more and that Parliament had been misled.

The opposition also objected to the passing of the?supplementary estimates during the vote yesterday saying there was an error in the vote count.

A heated exchange took place at which point the Speaker suspended sittings for a party leader’s meetings to address the issue.

The Speaker also appointed a committee to look into the error in the vote count.?(Colombo Gazette)
