The Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) today urged local election observers to push for the Local Government (LG) elections to be held on schedule.
MEP leader Dinesh Gunawardena met the Executive Director of the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Rohana Hettiaracchi in Colombo today and discussed issues related to the polls.
Gunawardena pointed out at the meeting that the postponement of the LG election by the Government is illegal.
He also said that since the term of the LG bodies had ended, failing to elect new LG bodies is affecting the normal operations in the respective LG bodies.
Rohana Hettiaracchi pointed out that postponing the elections is not acceptable. However he said there is still an issue over delimitation and this had resulted in the polls being postponed.
Hettiaracchi however said the Government can hold elections in areas where the?delimitation issue has been resolved. (Colombo Gazette)
