Uduwe Dhammaloka granted bail for illegal possession of elephant

The venerable?Uduwe Dhammaloka thero, who was arrested this week for the illegal possession of an elephant calf, was released on bail today.

The?Attorney General (AG) had earlier given the?clearance to arrest the monk. The monk was arrested on Wednesday.

The CID has been conducting the investigations on the monk?and the case had been called several times and the files were sent to the AG.

However with the former AG retiring, there was a delay in obtaining clearance to arrest the monk till the new AG took office.(Colombo Gazette)

Fishermen will not be jailed

Indian fishermen who stray into Sri Lankan waters will not be jailed in future but their boats will be seized, Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne said today. The Minister said that the move is part of a new initiative to be adopted by the Sri Lankan government on humanitarian grounds to deal with Indian fishermen. Armed robbers caught on CCTV

A group of armed robbers who forced employees of a financial institution in Gampaha into a room and stole jewellery and cash have been caught on CCTV cameras installed in the institution. The police media unit released the CCTV images of the robber and sought public assistance which could lead to their arrest.
