Government says some missing people may have feld overseas

Mahinda-SamarasingheThe Government says some people reported missing during or soon after the war may have gone overseas.

Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said that when he was with the former Government he had worked with the Foreign Ministry to seek information on people reported missing and believed to have been living in a foreign country.

However Samarasinghe, who was the Minister in charge of human rights under the Mahinda Rajapaksa Government, said that some foreign Government’s refused to share information on Sri Lankans who fled Sri Lanka and are living in a foreign country.

“Those countries did not share the information as that would have been a violation of their laws,” he said.

The Minister however said that it is the responsibility of the Government to make every attempt to look for those still missing.

He said the current Government has the political will to investigate the incidents related to the war and ensure justice is served. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. The statement that missing people would have fled overseas is stupid because if they have fled overseas, they would have been in contact with their relatives here in Sri Lanka. If that be the case why should the people make complaints of their missing relatives. Who knows the armed forces would have killed those who surrendered to them and burnt their bodies leaving no evidence

    • Ade Sellam, Missing people were surfaced in India, Germany, France, Canada, England……..Were they reborn after they surrendered to armed forces who would have killed and burnt their bodies leaving no evidence.

  2. Those foreign governments, giving new identities to so called “refugees” are unintentionally encouraging criminals to escape to those countries by making bogus allegations against Sri Lanka and claiming persecution. This situation is bad for Sri Lanka’s image but worse for the security of such foreign nations.
Something got to be done to rectify this loop hole exploited by undesirables..

  3. No doubt about it
