Cabinet approves proposal to shift Manning Market

Cabinet has approved a proposal to shift the popular?Manning Market in?Fort to Peliyagoda, the Government announced today.

The Government said that the Colombo, Fort area have been recognized as a combined development zone under the Colombo City Development Plan (2008-2020) prepared by the Urban Development Authority.

As a result the old St. John Fish Market has been re-established in the Peliyagoda area and the Vegetable and Fruit Stock Trade Centre is also to be relocated to?Peliyagoda and the present Manning Market premises is to be used for provision of public transportation facilities.

The Government said that the proposal made by PataliChampikaRanawaka, the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, to relocate the Manning Market in a land of 25 acres owned by the Urban Development Authority in Peliyagoda at an estimated cost of Rs. 4 billion, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. Swiss Embassy employee arrested

A Swiss Embassy employee, who claimed she was kidnapped and released, was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) this evening. The employee was arrested on the grounds of falsifying evidence. The local employee was produced before a Magistrate and remanded till 30 December.
