An immigration officer and a passenger were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) with 5.1 kg of gold, the customs department said.
The?customs department said that the?passenger, a 31 year old resident of Kattankudy arrived from Malaysia this morning.
The immigration officer was on duty at the arrival lounge at the airport and is a resident of Puttalam.
They were both arrested by customs officers at the arrival lounge with four packets containing 392 gold chains weighing 3,300 grams valued at Rs. 18,153,025.00 and 18 gold slabs weighing 1,800 grams valued at Rs. 9,000,000.00, concealed in a brief case belonging to the immigration officer.
The total weight is 5.1 kg and total value is Rs. 27,153,025.
Investigations are being carried out by the Deputy Superintendent of Customs Nishantha Jayasinghe, M.K. Udaya Gamini, Hasantha Guruge, Assistant Superintendent of Customs Nuwan Abeynayaka and A.K.R. Samanjith. (Colombo Gazette)
