Harper avoids questions on Sri Lanka

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper stayed clear from responding to questions on Sri Lanka during a news conference in Senegal today. Harper was questioned by the media why he will attend a summit in the Democratic Republic of the Congo despite being concerned about the human rights situation in the country. The Canadian Premier had said last year that he will not attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Sri Lanka next year until the government addresses human rights concerns.

Sri Lanka fights US resolution

The government has launched a campaign through the Sri Lankan Embassy in the United States to lobby against a resolution presented by a US Congressman on Sri Lanka, the Sunday Leader newspaper reported today. External Affairs Ministry sources told The Sunday Leader that the Sri Lankan Embassy had already managed to have the resolution withdrawn from the calendar for this year. However there are fears the document, House Resolution 177, may be re-submitted and passed in Congress before January

BASL adopts resolution on threat to judiciary

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) today adopted a resolution on the threats faced by the?judiciary. During a meeting held today the BASL resolution called for the?protection?of the independence of the judiciary. It also condemned the attack on the Secretary of the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) Manjula Tillakaratne. BASL President Wijeydasa Rajapaksa said that the BASL had also urged the police to arrest those responsible for the attack on the JSC secretary within a month.
