Second reading of 2016 budget passed in Parliament

The second reading of the 2016 budget was passed in Parliament today with 159 members voting for and 52 against it while 13 members were absent.

There were cheers in Parliament from the Government benches when it was found that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was among those absent during the vote.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) voted against the budget while the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) voted for it.

The final vote on the budget will be taken on December?19. (Colombo Gazette)

Lottery ticket sales agents suspend strike after talks

Lottery ticket sales agents have?decided to temporarily suspend a strike after President Maithripala Sirisena assured them a solution to their concerns by Monday. Udayanga’s bank accounts in Sri Lanka frozen

The bank accounts of former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga, were frozen today on a court order. The Colombo Fort Magistrate ordered 16 bank accounts of Udayanga Weeratunga to be frozen.
