03 Nov, 2015

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya is to probe the army presence near Parliament today?following a request put forward by the joint opposition.

Jayasuriya said that he had not ordered the army or police to be present near Parliament and to close the road fearing university students who staged a protest today will attempt to make their way to Parliament.

Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) leader Dinesh Gunawardena asked the Speaker if he was responsible for the strong army and police presence near Parliament.

The Speaker dismissed the claim and said that he does not issue orders to the army or police and added that he will investigate who issued the orders.

Earlier in the day the?police had obtained a court order preventing university students who staged a protest in and around Colombo, from protesting on Parliament road. (Colombo Gazette)
