IGP orders probe into police torture claims

IGP N K Illangakoon has ordered an investigation into claims the Kotadeniyawa police had tortured a 17 year old youth who was released after being arrested on suspicion in connection with the murder?of 4 1/2 year old Seya Sadewmini in Kotadeniyawa.

Police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that the IGP had issued the order after a complaint was lodged against the?Kotadeniyawa police.

The Minuwangoda Magistrate this week?ordered the release of two suspects, including the?17 year old youth arrested on suspicion over the murder of the child.

The order was given after DNA tests found that the two suspects had no direct connection with the murder of the child. (Colombo Gazette)
