New MPs commit to work towards National Unity

The importance of working towards National Unity and Reconciliation was endorsed by a vast majority of Parliamentarians who attended a workshop conducted at the Parliamentary premises earlier this month, the?Office for National Unity and Reconciliation said today?.

The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) conducted a session titled ?Using Parliamentary Mechanisms In Promoting National Unity and Reconciliation? on the first day of the workshop, which highlighted the importance of celebrating the diversity of Sri Lankans.

Speaking at the occasion, both, the Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake and the UN Resident Representative in Sri Lanka Subinay Nandy, appreciated contribution of ONUR towards the workshop for newly elected MPs.

Some of the MPs who spoke following the session conducted by ONUR also emphasized the important role played by the Office and expressed their commitment to work towards taking the message of National Unity and Reconciliation forward by way of setting up a Parliamentary Caucus.

The workshop, hosted by the Secretary General of the Parliament, was inaugurated by ?Prime Minister and attendees included the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Members of Parliament, invited resource personnel and officials of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR).

The ONUR is chaired by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and operates under the presidential secretariat. The ONUR intends to engage further with policymakers at various levels in promoting National Unity and Reconciliation. (Colombo Gazette)
