Lankan migrants held captive in Mexico rescued

A group of Sri Lankans were among 19 migrants held captive by a criminal group who were rescued in Tamaulipas state, Mexico, by Mexican police and immigration authorities, the El Universal news portal reported.

Migrants from Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Sri Lanka had been held hostage in several locations throughout the city of Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas.

The criminals had reportedly deceived their victims by offering to take them from the city of San Luis Potosi to the border with the United States.

However, once the migrants reached Nuevo Laredo, they were deprived of their liberty and exacted telephone numbers of relatives for ransom purposes, the media reported.

The released migrants have now been?provided with food, water and medical care, and they have the opportunity to contact their families, the article said, citing the Mexican Institute for Migration.
One of the suspected organizers of the kidnappings was detained by police, according to the media.

Two Covid patients die at Homagama Base Hospital

Two coronavirus patients have died while receiving treatment at the Homagama Base Hospital. The Government said that the two deaths took the coronavirus death toll in Sri Lanka to 280 today. Of the two victims, one is a 69-year-old man from Mount Lavinia. He died while receiving treatment at the Homagama Base Hospital. The second victim is an 82-year-old woman from Ranala.
