Government will not comment on alleged UN document

Mahishini ColonneThe Government today refused to comment on a document a British television station claims could undermine international investigations into the war.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mahishini Colonne said the Government was aware of the British ‘Channel 4’ news report on the document but will not comment on such media reports.

Channel 4 News reported this week that it has been supplied with the leaked UN document which it claim could pre-empt and undermine September’s Human Rights Council discussion on a UN’s long-awaited investigation into crimes committed at the end of Sri Lanka’s 26-year civil war.

According to the UN tens of thousands of Tamil civilians died in the closing stages of the Sri Lankan military’s war against the LTTE, also known as the Tamil Tigers.

The UN says most of those civilians died in government shelling as they were crammed into ever-diminishing “No Fire Zones” – though the Tamil Tigers are also alleged to have committed grave abuses including suicide bombings and the use of human shields.

Channel 4 News said the document appears to be have been created by the UN in conjunction with the Sri Lankan government, and outlines plans to set up a purely domestic inquiry into human rights violations – with technical support from the UN.

Most human rights groups regard plans for an internal judicial process as unacceptable and many warn it would inevitably be seen as a “victor’s court”.

The leaked UN plan claims that the “implementing partners” for the scheme would include, along with the Sri Lankan government, the Tamil-dominated Northern Provincial Council, widely seen as representing the popular voice of the Tamils.

But that council’s chief minister, former Sri Lankan Supreme Court Judge CV Wigneswaran, told Channel 4 News that the UN had not even consulted them on the plan.

He added that despite the fact that under the scheme the council stood to receive half a million dollars in funding, he was minded to reject it. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Tamils have traveled by boats as refugees in thousands to many Western countries. As they are unaccounted for these “missing people” claim is a fake report to hide the identity of who live in those Western countries. UN is aware all these but they are happy to receive money from Tamil Diaspora to attack Sri Lanka.

    • This Clearly Shows that there are VESTED INTEREST that are working in a INT BODY such as the UNHCR. So much for independence. It clearly shows that when the UNHCR has taken a decision these interest at the VERY UNHCR who are clearly against Sri Lanka and want a different outcome ‘leaked’ the document to ‘CH4’ . So Much for independent investigation. This clearly shows that certain characters at the UNHCR are working against Sri Lanka or a Independent probe. and have colluded with CH4 and similar to give FILTERED information to a independent body. THIS MUST BE INVESTIGATED. A Int Body Must be Independent and no person or Group must be able to influence. This also must highlight why ‘Transparency’ is important and not Hidden witness who are so called fear for their live (that old false argument).. I mean we all know CH4 stance on SL issue.. They could not even bring themselves to class the LTTE Death Cult a ‘Terrorist ORG’ Let alone say that the Civilians were taken as a Human Shield by Gun point. That Death cult similar to today’s ISIL. It is the Leak that shows how vested interest working with Biased parties who have leaked information that should be investigated. So much for independence.

  2. Is this site run by a Sri Lankan ?

UN doesn’t say anything like that it’s Ki-Moons kangaroo commission who said that.

Shame on you for perpetuating those unsubstantiated allegations.

  3. C4 does not run Sri Lankan affairs. It is like many other human rights bodies offered healthy sums by the western LTTE reps. What else would you expect from this bogus media.
