Mahinda says no to a National Government

Mahinda Rajapaksa MRFormer President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said that the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) will not agree to form a National Government after the August 17 Parliamentary election.

Speaking at an election rally in Matale today, Rajapaksa said that the United National Party (UNP) has been speaking of forming a National Government after the election.

However he said the UPFA is confident of securing majority seats in Parliament and will not form a National Government.

Rajapaksa also warned the public to be on alert over the election manifesto of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the support it is getting from the UNP.

The former President noted that the TNA has called for power devolution but the UPFA will not allow the country to be divided.

He said that a UPFA Government will look to address the genuine concerns of the Tamils but will not agree to a solution which creates an Eelam State.

In its election manifesto released in Jaffna yesterday, the TNA had said that the Tamil people are entitled to self-determination in keeping with United Nations International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights and Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, both of which Sri Lanka has accepted and acceded to.

TNA leader R. Sampanthan, reading out from the TNA election manifesto at the launch event, said that power sharing arrangements must continue to be established as it existed earlier in a unit of a merged Northern and Eastern Provinces based on a federal structure. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Biggest joker, PATHOLOGICAL LIAR, Actually all rajavassas family members and its close associates are pathological liers. THIEVES ROGUES. Hopefully village idiots will know who they are in this coming election. KURUNAGALA show us that you aint stupid.

    • Last time Ponil and his international gang lied to us from left right and center and made us vote against Mahinda. Not any more for we have now experienced the truth about ‘yahapalanaya’.

  2. It’s unlikely that the UPFA would have agreed to such an agreement even under Siripala de Silva. SLFP will win the most seats, and will want to form government in its own right. However, this will only happen if UPFA wins a majority. This is because all minor parties of note (hard left, hard right and ethnic) are behind Wickramasinghe-Sirisena. Therefore, UNP merely has to prevent UPFA gaining a majority, and it will be able to form another weak minority government. Without the support of the SLFP, it will be even more feeble than the previous one. End result: no one wins (expect Ranil and UNP, of course). Rajapaksa does not complete his comeback; key stakeholders don’t get the reforms they desire.

  3. You cant form a national govt because you idiot no decent educated intelligent person will join you.Only the thieves crooks drug trafikers ethanol dealers rapists murderes will join you thug.

  4. Who is Mahinda who is making this statement “No to National Government”? What authority has he got, other than the support of all the crooks who robbed under him, with him, and with his family.

Mahinda is not the President, he is not the Prime Minister and he is not even a Minister or an MP. So who is he?

He is the one who is trying to save his neck as he has so many charges against him re: Murder, Robbery and Pilfering Public Funds.

Now who is Mahinds to make this statement, he is a lost President and he is going to be a “LOOSER” again.

  5. The real reason why war winning president Rajapaksa lost the presidential election was purely TNA affiliated parties’ support to common candidate Sirisena. Now Sampanthan is attempting to get separation through federalism with the help of Sirisena-Wickramasinghe government. That is obvious because UNP led Alliance declared that they will offer federalism but in order to pacify Sinhalese they use the term ‘unitary’ as well, But any body knows that federalism and unitary system are two different systems. So who is fooling whom ?

  6. Sinhalese people who were living in North should be given their land back to them before we talk about devolution of power. Also North should be for every one, such as Muslims, Sinhalese, Catholic, Buddhist etc, otherwise this power devolution suggestion is similar to “Peace talks” by LTTE. They want to start the dividing while showing all signs of racism.

  7. TNA will support MR for there own survival. We need educated people to manager the Country and State institutes. My only wish is JVP for the first time.

  8. Not that MR does not know the meaning of devolution
of power, within a unitary state. but what he wants, is to create disharmony among the people, brain washing
the majority that devolution will lead to separation. This is because the ltte songs are taken off the selves, being
out dated and he has nothing else to sell ,except inducing fear of division of the country and doubt, whether people will buy this story as he, on the other hand , says that he is the one who devolved power and made N/E provincial council functioning .What TNA wants is a merged N/E province, as practised before as the language spoken is Tamil in both provinces and admin. becomes easier with Police,
Courts, schools and govt. offices functioning in the language people know to read and write and at the same time culture, language and religion could be developed in the area. MR is getting mixed up with diaspora howling and what TNA stands for.Tamils
will not accept TNA being called separatists

.Even rest of the country can be divided into Upcountry and Low country councils as language spoken and the major religion is the same, except culture may differ a little, instead of having another 7 provincial councils, costing the country heavily.

    • What !!! Devolution of power WITHIN A UNITARY STATE ??? We have to sympathise with whoever writes under the name of Lanka Watch because any boy who had studied the subjects civics and/or government at school would know that unitary means one thing and federal means quite the opposite. In federalism what happens is devolve power to the regions. Another word for that is devolution of power. If power is ‘devolved’ there cannot exist a ‘unitary’ state in that country as power has been devolved and central authority for the regions does not remain within the centre. This is called devolution. So how can power be devolved in a unitary state ????? If power is devolved that state loses unitary character and becomes a federal state. UNP should not attempt to fool the educated people of this country.

  9. TAMIL NATIONAL DETERMINATION AND ALL OTHER TAMIL NATIONAL RIGHTS OF CIVIL, POLITICAL, CULTURAL, ECONOMIC RIGHTS CAN BE HAD ONLY IN THE TAMILCOUNTRY OF TAMIL NADU. SRI LANKA BEING THE ONLY SINHELA NATIONAL COUNTRY OF THE WORLD, HENCE TAMIL AND ALL OTHER SETTLER COMMUNITIES IN SRI LANKA TOO MUST BECOME SRI LANKAN OR SINHELA NATIONAL CITIZENS OF THE ISLAND COUNTRY, WHICH IS THE UNIVERSAL POLITICAL PRINCIPLE PRACTISED IN ALL OTHER COUNTRIES. SRI LANAKA CONSTITUTION NEEDS TO BE CORRECTED TO ONE NATION ONE COUNTRY PRINCIPLE TO STOP THIS OUTRAGEOUS INSIDIOUS INVASIVE ATTEMPTS BY SETTLER COMMUNITIES. NOW SOMEONE COULD SAY SINHELA PEOPLE TOO CAME FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY LIKE TAMILS FROM TAMILNADU AND MUSLIMS FROM MUSLIM COUNTRIES. THE SELF EVIDENT FACT IS NO OTHER SINHELA COUNTRY ANYWHERE ELSE EXCEPT SRI LANKA IDENTIFIED BY THIS NICKNAME.

  10. They (LTTE and Tamil supporters to ELAM) destroyed our country for over 30 years if not M.R. srilanka would like Somali or worse. M.R. learnt the real motive of majority of Tamil’s and Muslims after January 8 presidential elections doing so much to the north & east he will never repeated the same mistakes ever. UN, USA, UK & other bunch of countries can’t hoodwink M.R. or his administration just like what they do with UNP & it’s leaders. All Sinhalese unite with M.R. & UPFA.

  11. Yes, we have lived for many many years with the Sinhalayas and the Yonas in harmony. The separations were started by Hon. P Ramanaden and Hon GG Ponnambalam Q.C. Let us have a good Parliament with Westminister System or the Donoughmore System (without political parties) like in the days of Leader Sir D.B.Jayatilake .
What Self-determination? TNA leaders must read authors Lauterpact, Surinam et al on Self-determination.TNA , diaspora & RUDIRAKUMARAN , PLEASE DO NOT PREACH SEPERATIONS.LET US LIVE IN HARMONY.DO NOT MISDIRECT THE INNOCENT TAMILS BY SAYING THAT THE U.N. RECOGNIZES SELF-DETERMINATION FOR S.L.Tamils. It is your interpretation. Educate us by showing us the debates in the U.N. general assembly when and how, quoting chapter and verse with the name of SL as your proof please.
