Court stops SLFP meeting without party head

A court order has been issued against the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) from convening a Central Working Committee meeting without the permission of the head of the party.

The District Court of Colombo issued the order based on a?petition filed by Sri Lanka Freedom Party member Prasanna Solangaarachchi.

President Maithripala Sirisena is the head of the SLFP and he had opposed an attempt by the SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadharshana Yapa to convene a special SLFP Central Working Committee meeting this evening.

Earlier today President Sirisena had sent a letter to Yapa stating that the?Central Working Committee cannot be convened without his permission.

In his petition to Court,?Solangaarachchi said that there were media reports stating that Yapa had convened a special?Central Working Committee meeting this evening.

The meeting was to take place in the backdrop of a statement made to the media yesterday by President Maithripala Sirisena with regards to the nominations given to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa from the SLFP and the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) to contest the August 17 Parliament election.

Solangaarachchi said that Yapa cannot convene the meeting without the permission of the party leader and accordingly the Court issued a restraining order on the meeting and will hear the case on July 29. (Colombo Gazette)
