Report on prison riot handed over to PM

The report on the investigations conducted over the Welikada prison riot was handed over to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today.

The report is based on investigations conducted by a three member committee appointed by the Justice Ministry in January this year.

The committee chaired by retired High Court Judge Wimal Nambuwasam comprised of retired Deputy IGP Ashoka Wijethileke and retired Administrative Officer Attorney SK Liyanage.

The Justice Ministry said that the three member committee had recorded statements from several people and conducted a full investigation before compiling the final report.

The report has made several recommendations which will be implemented on the advice of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Justice Ministry said.

Several people were killed and injured in the Welikada prison riot in November 2012 which resulted from a clash between inmates and prison guards. (Colombo Gazette)
