The Government and Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa today proposed in Parliament that Parliament be dissolved and elections be held.
The issue over the Central Bank Governor arose today during Parliament sittings and this led to a heated exchange of words between the Government and the opposition.
The opposition questioned the Government on the right Arjuna Mahendran had to continue as the?Central Bank Governor.
Opposition MP Dinesh Gunawardena said that since?Mahendran is a citizen of Singapore he cannot be the Governor of the Central Bank.
However Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, in response, said that anyone who leaves Sri Lanka owing to threats and obtains citizenship overseas and then returns to Sri Lanka can hold office in a state institution.
However?Gunawardena was not satisfied with the response and later UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella said that the best thing to do would be to dissolve Parliament since the opposition is not satisfied with any response given over the issue.
Government MPs then stood up and backed the call to dissolve Parliament and Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa commented saying even he feels Parliament must be dissolved. (Colombo Gazette)
