Low level delegation for June session

The Government will not be sending a high level delegation for the June session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mahishini Colonne said that Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Geneva Ravinatha Aryasinha will be attending the session.
Meanwhile, she said the Government is working on the domestic mechanism to investigate alleged human rights abuses said to have taken place during the war.
The Government has assured the international community, including the UNHRC that a domestic mechanism will be in place by September.
The Government is expected to brief the?UNHRC on the domestic mechanism at the September session of the Council in Geneva.
Colonne, meanwhile,?said that dates have yet to be confirmed for a visit to Sri Lanka by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.
The Government has invited the High Commissioner to visit Sri Lanka and Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera had told Parliament earlier that the visit was expected to take place in June. (Colombo Gazette)
