Rathika not under house arrest (Updated)

The police and army have denied reports that Sri Lankan born Tamil Canadian Parliamentarian, Rathika Sitsabaiesan was placed under house arrest since last night in Jaffna where she is currently on a fact finding mission.

Earlier Jaffna media reports indicated that no one was allowed to meet the MP last night at the hotel she was staying.

However senior police DIG of the Northern Province Pujith Jayasundara and the army, both denied reports that Sitsabaiesan was under house arrest.

The Immigration and Emigration department said that Sitsabaiesan is in Sri Lanka on a tourist visa and has so far not violated her visa regulations.

Head of investigations at the Immigration and Emigration department Amit Perera said that they have not been informed to confiscate the passport of the MP or detain her.

The Terrorist Investigations Department also denied that its officers had surrounded her hotel in Jaffna last night.

Earlier the Canadian MP, who has been very critical of the Sri Lankan Government, had met displaced families in Vallikamam North.

On Sunday she had visited Mannar while on Monday she had meetings in Kilinochchi and Jaffna.

The Scarborough Rouge River MP had also met Tamil National Alliaes.nce members in the North to gather information on the current situation.

Among those she met was Tamil National Alliance provincial council member and human rights activist Anandi Sasitharan.

Sasitharan told the Colombo Gazette on Monday that she briefed the Canadian MP on women’s issues and human rights violations taking place in the North.

She also said that Sitsabaiesan was briefed on disappearances which took place in the North. (Colombo Gazette)

Eelam Tamil should be focused on her electorate in Tiger infested Scarborough. For example, she should work on getting more Federal Canadian welfare grants to tamil tiger economic refugees. She should try to get welfare checks for Tiger welfare queens and try to get quota jobs for tiger Tamil terrorists in Canada without trying to start another war in Sri Lanka. Get more dole handouts at Canadian taxpayer expense for economic refugees .

ignorant people. a person is and should be allowed to do whatever they like within the barriers of the law. even on a tourist visa she should still be allowed to meet people at her will. as a “civilized” and “rights conscious” country, Sri Lanka sure comes off as barbaric and backwards with actions like this. grow up

Being Canadian MP she has better things to do here Scarborough electorate as member of the NDP she should raise some concern over tbe increase of TTC fares, proposed gas tax, Scarborough proposed MRT system. Sonw removals on back roads. Wonder why she wants reslove issues in srilanka rather than her own electorate?
