UN says demo peaceful

27 Aug, 2013

The United Nations (UN) has termed the protest held outside the UN office in Sri Lanka yesterday as being “peaceful”.
The protest was staged by a group of monks against the Sri Lanka visit of UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay.
During the daily press briefing held at the UN Headquarters in New York, journalists questioned the UN about the protest.
Farhan Haq, Associate Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General said that ?Ms. Pillay was not in the vicinity of the peaceful protest at the United Nations compound in Colombo?.
Dozens of monks took part in the protest yesterday and at least one monk had attempted to enter the UN compound but was prevented from doing so by the police. (Colombo Gazette)
