In report to UNGA, expert notes concerns on VAT in Sri Lanka

A UN expert has noted concerns on the Value Added Tax (VAT), in a report to be presented to the UN General Assembly in October. The UN Independent Expert on foreign debt and human rights, Juan Pablo Bohoslavsky, said in the report that in Sri Lanka, there are concerns at the significant rise in the value added tax, given that the brunt of such taxes is often borne by the poorest. Juan Pablo Bohoslavsky made his observations on Sri Lanka based on a visit he undertook to the country last year.

Sujeewa says purported letter from Akila vague and unprofessional

United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian and Minister of Science and Technology, Sujeewa Senasinghe, has written to UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam over a show cause letter he had received. Senasinghe says he received the letter by fax but does not believe it was sent by the UNP General Secretary as it is vague and unprofessional. The Minister called on the UNP General Secretary to conduct an inquiry into the bogus letter which tarnishes the image of the UNP General Secretary

AG files indictments on Nissanka Senadhipathi and seven others

The Attorney General has filed indictments in the Avant-Garde arms trafficking case against Avant-Garde Chairman Nissanka Senadhipathi and seven others. The AG has filed 7,573 charges against the accused in the case before the Trial-at-Bar at the Colombo High Court. The Chief Justice had recently appointed a Trial-at-Bar to hear the Rathupaswala, Eknaligoda and Avant-Garde cases.
