25 Jun, 2013

The?Campaign for a Free and Fair Election (CaFFE) has urged war displaced people living in the North East who were displaced due to war and internal conflicts to register as voters to secure their voting rights.
The Executive Director of CaFFE,?Keerthi Tennakoon, said that there is now an opportunity for the displaced people to ensure their voting rights and to make out whose names were in the Voters Registry in any Electoral Division until 2009 or whose names were not in any of the Voters Registry after 2009.
The Elections Commission has implemented the Voter registration Act No 27 of 2013 (Special Provision) and called for applications from eligible Citizens of Sri Lanka.
Application forms can be obtained from the Grama Niladari or District Assistant Election commissioners until 28th?June 2013. The Elections commissioner has given a relief period of seven days to include their names in the supplementary list. Therefore there is an opportunity for the unregistered people to submit their appeals for registration until July 5th?2013.
CaFFE has made available advice for this process through their hotline number?0114341524. (Colombo Gazette)
