The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) has once again criticised Muslims who wear the Niqab and Burka in Sri Lanka saying that it should not be allowed.
Bodu Bala Sena Secretary General, the venerable Galagodaththe Gnanasara Thero, speaking at the BBS convention in Badulla, said that Sri Lanka should not be turned into an Arabian country.
He claims that some local banks had contacted him and said that Muslim women wearing the Niqab or Burka is a problem for them.
“When women wearing a Niqab or Burka go to a bank to do a transaction and when they are asked to show their Identity Cards (ID) the bank officer is unable to verify the identity as the woman’s face is covered. When the woman is asked to show the face she refuses. So how do we know if it is a man or woman under the dress,” Galagodaththe Gnanasara Thero said.
The targeting of some Muslims by the Bodu Bala Sena comes even as Minister of National Language and Social Integration Vasudeva Nanayakara submitted a Cabinet paper recently seeking a crackdown hate speeches.
The venerable Galagodaththe Gnanasara Thero had said at a BBS convention earlier this year that the country should be ready to rally against Christian and Muslim extremist groups operating in the country.
He insisted that the Bodu Bala Sena does not have issues with Muslims and Tamils as a whole. However he said that Muslim women should not be allowed to wear the Niqab in Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)
