The Navy says it arrested 49 Indian fishermen when they entered Sri Lankan waters illegally on Wednesday.
Navy spokesman Kosala Warnakulasuriya said that 24 fishermen were arrested off Mannar while 25 others were arrested off Jaffna.
At least 10 boats had also been seized, the navy spokesman told the Colombo Gazette.
Meanwhile the Press Trust of India reported that this is the first instance of arrest of fishermen after the end of the annual breeding season 45-day ban on mechanised trawling, which began on April 15.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa has been pressing for retrieval of the Katchatheevu island, ceded to Sri Lanka in 1974, to prevent arrests and attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen. (Colombo Gazette)
