Probe on media role in monk’s death

The government has launched a special investigation into the role of the media in the death of a monk in Kandy.
The government information department said that?Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella had asked his ministry to investigate the death of the venerable Bowatte Indrarathana Thera, by self-immolation opposite the Dalada Maligawa.
The Mass Media and Information Ministry launched the inquiry into the incident following information that the monk had reportedly given a statement to local media about his intention to kill himself by setting himself on fire, in protest against cattle slaughter in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigations Department launched a separate probe into the incident, the Police said.
The Police said they recorded statements from several reporters who were present at the time the monk divulged his plans.
The monk suffered injuries to over 95 percent of his body. He was admitted to the Kandy Hospital following his immolation attempt and later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. (Colombo Gazette)
