More to be done in Lanka says US

The United States says that while it?recognises?the progress made on some issues in Sri Lanka, more needs to be done on reconciliation and accountability.
The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Michele J. Sisson, in a Twitter interview today, said that the US and the international community recognize progress in infrastructure, demining and on the IDP issue in Sri Lanka.
?US & intl community recognize progress in infrastructure, demining, IDPs but note more needs to be done on reconciliation & accountability,? she said in response to a question.
She also said that?implementing?the?recommendations?of the Lessons Learned and Reconciliation (LLRC) is positive, but yet the?government?was looking at addressing only selective?recommendations based on the commitment it gave at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva.
The Ambassador also noted that the government should engage with civil society in a more consultative manner.
“US designated LTTE terror org in 1997. We urge govt to conduct independent & credible investigation of alleged HR violations by all sides,” she said.
She also said that the US relationship with the people of Sri Lanka is enduring and the engagement remains robust and multifaceted.
In response to a question on the arrest of Muslim politician Azath Salley, the US envoy urged the government to ensure Salley has access to his attorneys, and that rule of law and due process are protected. (Colombo Gazette)
