Tamil girls complete military training

A group of 95 Tamil girls completed basic military training and joined the army ranks today, the army media unit said.
The girls are the fist Tamil female recruits to successfully complete basic military training, Army spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said.
He said that a passing out ceremony was held at the Security Force Headquarters in Kilinochchi today to mark the event.
Brigadier R Rathnasinham the Director Sports Sri Lanka Army was the chief guest of the event and he took the salute from the passing out recruits.
More than 3000 local spectators including the members of the clergy, local and foreign dignitaries witnessed the ceremony.
The event was graced by Rt Rev. Dr. Daniel S Thiagarajah the Bishop of Church of South India who presented the trophies for the recruits that excelled in the physical efficiency test and foot drill.
?The girls stood with pride and were full of energy and enthusiasm.? It was a refreshing sight and the contentment of achievement was written all faces,? the army spokesman said. (Colombo Gazette)
