The Bodu Bala Sena has rejected the proposal made by the?All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama (ACJU) that the?government?take over the issuing of the Halal certificates in?coordination?with the?ACJU.
Speaking during a talk show over a private television station late this evening, the Bodu Bala Sena said that the issue should be further?discussed and the proposal put forward by the?ACJU is not acceptable as the final?solution.
The Bodu Bala Sena also said it is not against the Halal certificate and respects the rights of Muslims who wish to purchase products with the certification.
However the monks say they don’s want the Halal certified products to be sold to Buddhists.
Monks attached to the Bodu Bala Sena had this month launched an anti-halal campaign, during a convention in Maharagama.
A declaration adopted at the convention also sought a ban on birth control and sending Sri Lankan maids to the Middle East.
Hundreds of people attended the convention and posters were seen erected on the stage objecting to the Halal certification. (Colombo Gazette)
