The main opposition United National Party (UNP) today boycotted the national Independence Day celebrations held in Trincomalee.
UNP MP Ravi Karunannayake told the Colombo Gazette that the UNP had taken a policy decision to boycott the events organised by the government.
He said that the UNP held its own Independence Day celebrations in Galle today with the participation of UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
“We decided not to attend the government’s celebrations. Therefore we had our own celebrations in Galle today,” Karunanayaka said.
UNP MP John Amaratunga said that UNP members had taken a collective decision not to attend the government celebrations in Trincomlee. “All members agreed that they will attend the celebrations in Galle. Therefore we did not attend the celebrations in Trincomalee today,” Amaratunga said.
Speaking at the national celebrations in Trincomalee today, President Mahinda Rajapaksa had said that the opposition has a responsibility to protect the independence of the country. (Colombo Gazette)
