Hundreds stranded owing to train strike

Hundreds of passengers were stranded this morning as a result of an island-wide token train strike launched by railway workers today.

The Railway Department said that 15 trains were operating during the strike launched over salary anomalies.

Passengers heading to office in the morning were the hardest hit by the strike which was scheduled to take place earlier this week but was called off following talks with the authorities.

Railway trade unions said the strike was launched again today as the relevant officials failed to implement the decisions taken at the discussions between the trade unions and Transport Ministry earlier this week.
