Lankan arrested in India with gemstones

A passenger from Sri Lanka was arrested at Anna international airport in India today for trying to smuggle in Rs 50 lakh worth of gemstones, airport sources said.

They said airport security officers questioned Sabhoovan (32) on suspicion after he cleared the security check.

A check on his person revealed he had hidden 32 gem stones in his rectum which were seized, following which he was arrested, they said.

The value of the stones was Rs 50 lakh in the international market, they added. (IANS)

MOD warns of misinformation spreading via social media

The Ministry of Defence today warned of misinformation spreading via social media. The Media Centre of the Ministry of Defence said that misinformation was threatening to destabilise the country. The Ministry of Defence warned that under the Emergency Regulations action can be taken on anyone spreading fake news. While most social media sites have been blocked in Sri Lanka twitter is still active and others are using proxy services to access Facebook and whatsap.
