Suspect in Fonseka assassination attempt sentenced

The Kegalle court today sentenced an LTTE suspect to 35 years rigorous imprisonment for aiding and abetting to assassinate former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka in 2006.

Sanmugalingam Suriyakumar had been in remand custody for more than 6 years after he was arrested over the assassination attempt at the Army Headquarters in 2006 where a suicide bomber targeted Fonseka resulting in him sustaining serious injuries.

At least 10 people were killed in the bombing and several others sustained injuries.
