The police have temporarily suspended the driving license of over 11,000 drivers since the beginning of this year for driving under the influence of liquor.
According to statistics released by the police media unit today 23521 drunk drivers had been arrested and the driving license of 11085 drivers had been temporarily suspended.
The police also said that the driving license of 45 drivers had also been permanently cancelled during this same period.
Of this 24 drivers in Pollonaruwa, 6 in Anuradhapura, 5 in Kelaniya, 4 in Monaragala, 2 in Kegalle and one each in Nuwara Eliya, Ampara, Colombo Central and Colombo North had their driver;s licence permanently cancelled.
The police also said that during this year 25,000 road accidents had been reported and around 1500 people had been killed and a further 13,000 injured.
The police had launched special operations this month to nab drunk drivers and during this process 15 passenger bus drivers were also arrested.
