The diamond swallowed by a Chinese man last week during the Gem and Jewellery exhibition at the BMICH has been retrieved, the police said today.
Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the diamond has now been sent to the Gem and Jewellery authority to verify if it is a genuine or fake diamond.
The Chinese national was arrested and handed over to the Kurunduwatte police after he was seen swallowing the diamond at a stall during the exhibition last week.
However the Chinese man had later claimed that he had not swallowed a genuine diamond but a fake diamond.
Another man was believed to have been with the Chinese man and there is suspicion that he may had fled with the real diamond.
The police had found several fake diamonds with the suspect who was arrested.
