Ampara Mayor arrested

The Mayor of Ampara Indika Nalin Jayawickrema was arrested today and later released on bail after being produced in court, the police said.

He was arrested over allegations he had attempted to mislead the Air Force Commander claiming to be parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa.

The Ampara Mayor had got someone to call the Air Force Chief last year and order the cancellation of the transfer of an Air Force officer.

A former Air Force officer himself, the Mayor was arrested today on the advice of the Attorney General?s Department, the police said.

He was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate today and released on bail. A wing commander attached to the Air Force had also been arrested over the incident.
