Kelaniya fight to continue

The Chairman of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha Prassana Ranaweera says he and members of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha will continue their fight against Minister Mervyn Silva.

Speaking to reporters at a press briefing in Kelaniya a short while ago, Ranaweera said that they will also not accept Silva as the SLFP Kelaniya organizer.

This follows a statement by Minister Basil Rajapaksa that Minister Mervyn Silva cannot be removed unless President Mahinda Rajapaksa decides to do so.

A disciplinary inquiry against Silva over several allegations raised against him has also reportedly stalled.

Justice Minister defends Angunakolapelessa prison incident

Justice Minister Thalatha Athukorala today defended the actions of prison guards at the Angunakolapelessa prison over an assault incident. The Minister told Parliament that the prison guards had acted within their rights in order to control a situation which arose in the prison. The Minister was responding to a question raised in Parliament today by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna.
