Two arrested over assault

The police said that two people were taken into custody over the assault on a lawyer who appeared on behalf of the suspects in the Kotte Rajamahavihara Temple double murder case.

Sumith Silva who appeared for the suspects in the case involving the murder of two Monks at the Rajamaha Viharaya, was assaulted outside Magistrates Courts in Gangodawila last week.

Agitated by this incident a group of lawyers from Colombo decided to boycott courts today.

Attorney-at-Law Goonaratne Wanninayake the lawyers were demanding immediate action to bring the perpetrators to book and to strengthen security provided to lawyers inside the court premises.

However this afternoon Wanninayake said that the police had informed him two people were arrested over the incident and they will be produced in court.

As a result a protest which was to be staged tomorrow by the lawyers has been called off.

The Public Health Inspectors are conducting the raids on a directive of the Health Ministry, the PHI association said.
