The Australian Prime Minister’s X1 one-day cricket match against Sri Lanka in Canberra was abandoned today following heavy rain.

It was due to kick off at 10am Australia time at Canberra’s Manuka Oval, but could not even start by afternoon.

The match was to pit a young Australian team headed by Brad Haddin against Mahela Jayawardene’s squad.

Meanwhile the Sri Lankan cricketers met Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard at a reception she hosted for the team at her residence yesterday.

The Sri Lankans are in Australia for the Commonwealth Bank Tri Series, which features India and the hosts.

The series gets under-way on February 5 with Australia taking on India at Melbourne. (Pics courtesy Island cricket)
