Dilshan resigns from team captaincy

Sri Lanka cricket captain T.M. Dilshan has sent a letter to the cricket board saying he is resigning as the team captain.

The Sri Lankan Cricket Board said it had received Dilshan’s resignation letter today.

His resignation however did not come as a surprise as just prior to the South African series Dilshan had indicated his intensions to step down after having a poor run as captain.

Under Dilshan’s captaincy Sri Lanka lost a Test and One Day International series in the United Arab Emirates against Pakistan and then went on to lose a Test and One Day International series against South Africa.

Dilshan’s personal form as a batsman also suffered over the past several months but he came good in the final match of the South African tour on Sunday and helped his side to chase down South Africa’s score of 312 runs.

Former Sri Lankan vice captain Mahela Jayawardena is expected to be appointed as the new captain of the team and will lead the side to Australia for a tri-series also involving India.
